A Deployment Update Written In Stanzas: He's on his way home.
Military life was a whole new mindset,
Army Reserves was just one part of his identity.
She went from dating a Boeing 737 assembler,
To when time spent together was no longer a guarantee.
They thought they had a couple of weeks to prepare,
But then weeks turned into just 4 days.
They were entering his first deployment with daunting uncertainty,
But at least one thing was for certain, so he surprised her and they were engaged.
They fought through broken internet service,
Powered through unsynchronized time zones.
Sent letters and mailed care packages,
But she spent every night wishing he was just home.
She learned to miss the misplaced coffee cups,
that would never quite make it to the sink.
She realized that these things were trivial,
That cleaning up after each other wasn’t as inconvenient as they used to think.
She found that she didn’t have it in her,
To put all of his clothes away,
Having them spread out throughout their room,
Was her way of remembering that he’ll be home soon one day.
Deployments can create a whole new perspective,
The smallest of battles can no longer hold any weight.
When she learned that his base was attacked by suicide bombers back in December,
Well, they have since learned to always say I love you, just in case.
She was inspired by his bravery and courage,
He lived in a war yet remained strong and ready.
She constantly attempted to replicate his strength,
Because days always felt off and she had a hard time remaining steady.
Stress levels continued to rise,
When a global pandemic made them higher than ever before.
Because to get home now he had to fly,
Through two very dangerous wars.
You would think that she should be absolutely filled with excitement,
Because he’s on a plane now en route to the United States.
But she knows that she has yet to take a full breath,
Until he returns home safely — so for now, she waits.
Take care everyone,
